Miley Cyrus is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, who is famous for the hit single Achy Breaky Heart. Cyrus was born in Nashville as Destiny Hope Cyrus but at an early was nicknamed Smiley, which became Miley by her father.
At 13 Cyrus landed the lead role in the Disney Channels teen TV show Hannah Montana, in which she plays a regular teen with a rock star alter ego. The cable TV show became the most-watched program for kids ages 6 to 14. The show also spawned a hit soundtrack that debuted at number one of the Billboard Top 200. Billboard magazine critic Ray Waddell described Mileys charm as charisma and a very winning personality that's easily conveyed by both television and live performance."
In 2007 Cyrus released a follow-up album Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, which sold more than a million copies. Cyrus went on a 54-city concert tour. People magazine reported Cyrus was dating fellow teen pop star Nick Jonas of Jonas Brothers fame, who guest-starred on Hannah Montana and toured with Cyrus. Teen magazine website J-14.com often features news on Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.
People Magazine also featured Cyrus and her father Billy Ray on the cover of a July issue. The story talked about Cyruss parents efforts to keep her grounded because they fear her ending up like troubled Disney stars Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Seventeen magazine is another teen magazine that has covered the popularity of Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus.
Next Cyrus appeared on the cover of teen magazine CosmoGirl and soon after an unidentified person altered the cover with a false headline and posted it on the Internet, pregnancy rumors swirled. The New York Times interviewed J-14 magazine editor Janet Giovanelli regarding the rumors, which she declared preposterous. In response to the rumors, CosmoGirl magazine released a statement declaring Cyrus an intelligent, respectable role model for young girls.
In 2008 Cyrus was again featured on the cover of People magazine and dubbed the worlds richest kid, in a cover story about teen superstars. Cyrus signed a seven-figure book deal, raked in an estimated $1 million per week while on tour and is projected to sell $1 billion worth of Hannah Montana merchandise.
At the same time Cyruss People magazine cover hit stands, Vanity Fair magazine ran racy photos of Cyrus and a controversy ensued. Critics charged Cyrus with disappointing her pre-teen fan base and deemed the photos inappropriate because of their provocative nature. Cyrus issued an apology just as Vanity Fair magazine hit stands.
Currently Cyrus is filming the feature film version of the Hannah Montana TV show. Her grown-up album Breakout hits stores July 22. Cyrus wrote all but two songs on this album. In a Billboard magazine interview Cyrus said of the Vanity Fair magazine photos, "I don't think people will look at me any differently, because they're like, 'You know what, I'm going to do stupid stuff too, and I'm going to make mistakes, and that's fine.
