Though best known for his quirky blend of country and folk music, Lyle Lovett has become a recognizable pop figure through his work in film, as well.
Since the early 90s, Lovett has been establishing himself as a presence in movies and television, though usually just in bit parts or cameos, often as slightly odd, entertaining figures. Quirky is a term many people are allergic to, largely because at its worst, it simply means precocious and overly precious, something thats appeared in film often in the past few years. But quirky is a good way to describe Lyle Lovetts film persona, though its meant in the best possible way.
Though he hasnt had many film roles, the ones he has had stand out. He worked with Robert Altman on several films, the first being Lovetts debut in film, The Player. The 1992 film is often considered one of Altmans most accessible, being a relatively down-to-earth skewering of Hollywoods shallow power-plays, and the way the system corrupts art. Ironically, it was a fairly successful commercial film that reveled in its star power Altmans typically legion-sized casts of recognizable faces includes celebs by the truckload.
Lovett gets to play a spooky detective with the Los Angeles Police Department thats investigating the murder at the center of the story. Hes humorless and poker-faced, but his absurd behavior, popping up at weird times and practically stalking Timothy Robbins character, turns him into a comical force whenever hes onscreen.
The next year, he also had a small role in Altmans landmark ensemble film Short Cuts as a vengeful baker with an axe to grind. He receives an order for a birthday cake, but when no one comes to claim it, he becomes irate and starts leaving hateful messages on the family answering machine about the boy whos birthday cake it is. What he doesnt realize is no one picked it up because the boy was hit by a car. Theres a sad, absurd humor in Lovetts ridiculous character here, as well.
