Many telephone numbers within the NANP and which begin with 555 are reserved for use as fictitious numbers in movies, TV shows, video games, and other media. This ensures that telephone numbers used by the entertainment industry wont result in law suits by the actual owners of the telephone number.
There are, however, some exceptions to that rule. Only the numbers between 555-0100 and 555-0199 are reserved for fictional use. Other 555 numbers are assigned for actual use.
A common example of this is that directory assistance in Canada and the United States can be reached at 555-1212.
