Technology is a wonderful thing, isn't it? When you're overseas it can be a blessing. Most people these days have their gadgets and toys that they rely on to make their travelling easier. I bet that if you have a laptop computer you take it with you when you travel. It makes good sense, really, to do so. You've got a window to the world wherever you are, and can keep up with family and friends via email and blogs. It can make you feel closer to home, and less out of touch with what is happening in your 'real life'. Now, you can add watching TV on the web to that list.

Most of us know about torrenting. It's the big thing right now, and when you are at home, it's easy enough to boot up the computer and open the client and download whatever programs you have missed. When you are overseas this can be a bit more problematic. Most open networks most probably have blocked off the ports that these clients use because of the strain they put on the overall system. What you can do is watch TV via streaming.

How does this whole thing work? Just like with bittorrent you download a client and use that to access the cable programming you desire. Instead of downloading a file to your computer the client accesses the channel you desire and then streams it to whatever player you are using on your computer. Say, media player. There's no file left on your computer at the end of watching the program.

This can be another great way of keeping in touch with what is happening at home. Even if you see news programs on your home country, they usually are filtered by the newscasters in to how they affect the people there. It happens all over, and is a very natural thing. If there's a flood, the locals will want to know that none of their friends and family were affected. It's the same for you, but in a different way.

You can also keep up on any shows you may be missing the same way. In fact, you don't have to miss out on much at all, except the companionship of friends and family. But you have email and blogs for that, anyway.

Watching TV on the web can be a great way to keep in touch with what is happening at home. It's better than torrenting if you are on the move, and it can bring you closer to home when you are far away.
