Reviews of some horror movies I've watched.

Halloween

Dark and gritty 2007 remake about the psychopath Michael Myers who escapes from a mental institution - and returns home to kill his sister. The original "Halloween" was great, and this remake is also good - but in another way. Do yourself a favor and don't compare them - watch this remake as a standalone slasher and you'll enjoy it more. The backstory about Michael's childhood is way too long, but once the movie kicks into gear it's brutal and terrifying. Grade: 4 out of 5

Captivity

An actress is abducted and held captured in a cellar by a crazy psychopath. How can she escape when he's watching her every move? There's a nice reveal in the middle of the movie that stirs things up a little, but it's not enough. "Captivity" has a few suspenseful scenes, but mostly it's quite boring. Grade: 2 out of 5

Ab-normal Beauty

Visually stunning Asian horror by one of the Pang brothers. A girl gets fascinated by death after taking photographs of a car accident. Fascination turns into obsession and she now needs more and more gruesome pictures of death. The movie is beautiful, haunting, well acted, but ultimately unsatisfying because it's not scary enough. Grade: 2 out of 5

Turistas

American backpackers in Brazil encounter bad guys who want their internal organs for the black market. Gritty and gory in the style of "Hostel." Although terrible things happen, there's no nerve, no real suspense. And the finale under water doesn't work for me. Grade: 2 out of 5

Cinderella

Another Asian horror/drama that doesn't deliver in the scares department. Girls who had plastic surgery to look more beautiful suddenly start dying one by one. The movie looks beautiful, but the pace is really slow. The movie plays like a drama with two or three jolt scares thrown into the mix. Grade: 2 out of 5

See No Evil

Adult movie director Gregory Dark tries his hand on a real movie, and the result is this rather weak slasher. Teen criminals are sent to a hotel where a psychopath lurks - and soon he goes on a killing spree. Although the killings are brutal, there's too little suspense in this movie. One scene with a girl hanging out of a window stands out, and the last 15 minutes are pretty decent. Grade: 2 out of 5
