An inside source from a prominent Hollywood studio, who would not like to be named, has leaked an internal memo which indicates the studio is making bad comic-book movies intentionally.
At this time it is difficult to ascertain the intentions of this memo, but one thing is for certain, Hollywoods body of work on the comic-book movie topic appears to confirm the premiseHollywood is apparently producing poor quality movies with comic-book characters and plots intentionally.
Anonymous Hollywood sources were quick to refute the contents of the article and responded with a press release stating:
The movie-going audience is our judge, our employer, and our audience. We feel that we have and will continue to satisfy their desire for high quality motion picture entertainment. Our comic-book style movies are produced with the same amount of quality as any other movie that leaves our studio(s). When examining the false memo please keep in mind such films as: Superman, Spiderman 1-3, X-Men 1-3, and the current and upcoming Batman movie.
Although the press release appears to have been written by an amateur, several recent blockbuster movies were cited as evidence of the studio(s) intention of making quality comic-book style movies. Interestingly the release fails to mention the larger body of their contemporary comic-book style movies. Notorious examples include The Hulk 1-2, Daredevil, The Fantastic Four 1-2, Ghost Rider & all of the TMNT movies. Additionally, while the release does cite the current and upcoming Batman movies as an indicator of the quality of their filmmaking, it is a well known fact that a previous Batman movie, Batman Forever, was the worst movie ever produced by a Hollywood studio. In fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger, of Hercules in New York fame was quoted as saying: This movie (Batman Forever), really sucks!
The timing of this memo appears to be controversial with the release of the Jon Favreau film Iron Man set for May 2nd. It is predicted that this movie, despite its doubtful quality, will make several hundred million dollars domestically and internationally between theater releases, DVDs, Blue-Ray, download, and memorabilia. With an expected return like this, it is easy to see why Hollywood studios would bankroll this type of film, regardless of the content. No doubt, we will be reading about pre-production of an Iron Man II before long. We can only hope that the filmmakers can find another 2-second Black Sabbath sound clip to advertise the next installment. Orperhaps they can just Rick Roll us again into seeing that film as well.
