Gold, it is a very valuable commodity in World of Warcraft. Almost everyone in the game needs more gold for one thing or another, whether it be the shiny new epic flying mount, twinking out a low level character, or even boosting a trade skill such as blacksmithing or engineering. All of this requires gold. There are a lot of other things that don't require it, but that are made much easier if you happen to possess an excess amount of gold, such as the reputation grinding items and the like.
Many players use the Auction House to sell things that they have farmed or gathered out in the field. This is a great way of making gold in World of Warcraft, because items often fetch higher prices when sold to other players instead of vendors.
There are other ways of making gold in World of Warcraft using the Auction House, though, that are easy and don't take a lot of time.
Why not skip both and simply maximise your gold-making time in World of Warcraft? Rather than lose either time or lots of money you can pay a small one-time fee and gain the ability to maximise your gold-per-hour return.
Also, you don't necessarily need any real money to do this. Sometimes you can just find something listed on the Auction House that is only a few silver that might sell for one gold. If you do this enough times, things can really take off, and you really only spent your initial silver pieces.
If you are dithering on this question you probably have it in you to be a pretty hardcore gamer, but even then, the sheer convenience of the buy-and-get-it-now guide might overwhelm you. Personally, I have done it both ways.
Through my own experience in World of Warcraft I have managed to develop my own personal techniques and tricks for doing pretty much everything in the game.
