Real North Face jackets are incredibly expensive, between 150 and 300, and its tempting to spend less money for the same item on ebay or Amazon. However, before being tempted, there are some necessary precautions to take.
Before considering whether to bid, check out the sellers other listings and feedback. Is he/she offering lots of North Face type clothing at cheap prices? This would immediately cause suspicion. Some sellers buy lots of fakes in the Far East and offload them at EBay.
What are other buyers saying in feedback? Does he have at least 98% positive feedback or is he a new seller? Any concerns, I would walk away.
Look at the sellers picture of the item, does it look authentic or slightly limp? The jacket listing should read 100% authentic. If this isnt shown, send a message to the seller and ask. If he doesnt reply the jacket is obviously fake. If he says the jacket is genuine and it turns out be fake, at least you have some come-back and have grounds to complain to EBay. Pay by PayPal which gives extra security if problems arise.
A real North Face jacket has 2 or 3 tags attached, reading North Face Denali, while a fake will usually have one, usually reading something entirely different. Its not unknown for EBay scammers to steal tags from genuine jackets and attach to the fakes they are selling. The tag might not match up to the North Face jacket design purchased.
The fleecy material also feels much different where fake jackets tend to be smooth and limp, real jackets feel and appear to be of much higher quality, the fleece fuzzy as you would expect an expensive jacket to feel. The smell can be different too, fakes smelling much stronger due to the poor quality of materials used. The jacket colours and the way it hangs can also send out warning signals. The overall appearance of a genuine jacket is of an expensive, luxurious designer item, while an inferior alternative looks just that! There is no comparison between the two.
Look inside the jacket the stitching should be of smooth zigzag lines with no breaks in the line, there should be no threads hanging loose. Check the underarm seams which should be basted together in one complete line, rather than several rows of stitching which are used in fake products. Zips and pockets in real jackets are sewn correctly and evenly, where fakes can be unevenly sewn and roughly matched. The quality of a real North Face jacket is obvious, especially when seen beside an inferior alternative.
Although genuine bargains can be found on EBay, unfortunately many North Face jackets listed are fakes. Lots of care needs to be taken before spending hard-earned cash.
